Vertigo treatment chiropractic care at Greenlight Chiropractic & Wellness Lab

Vertigo Treatment in Lake Forest, CA

At Go Greenlight Chiropractic, Dr. Ron Merriel, DC, specializes in evaluating and treating vertigo and balance-related conditions.

Dizziness, spinning sensations, or balance issues may begin suddenly or develop gradually over time. Even when vertigo feels recent, underlying issues involving the neck, inner ear, or nervous system may have existed for longer. Vertigo symptoms can worsen or become more frequent if the root cause is not properly identified.

We perform a detailed examination to assess balance, posture, and spinal function. Based on your evaluation, care may include gentle chiropractic adjustments, targeted exercises, and movement guidance to support balance and stability.

Early evaluation can make a meaningful difference in how vertigo is managed over time. Contact Us to schedule an appointment.

What Causes Vertigo?

Most vertigo, especially in older patients, is caused by crystals within the inner ear. These crystals get lodged within the semicircular canals of the ear.

Another cause of vertigo is dysfunction or subluxation within the cervical spine. A lot of times it is the top vertebra, called the Atlas, which has a lot of nerves in that area. This can cause a vertigo-type feeling, especially when you turn your head.

How Do We Diagnose the Root Cause of Vertigo?

At Go Greenlight Chiropractic, diagnosis begins with a comprehensive evaluation rather than assumptions.

This may include:

  • Physical and neurological assessment
  • Review of symptom patterns and triggers
  • Postural analysis
  • Neck mobility and joint movement evaluation
  • Balance and coordination testing

Dr. Ron Merriel, DC, explains findings clearly so patients understand what is contributing to their vertigo.

Dr. Merriel also evaluates whether symptoms may be related to inner ear crystal involvement or cervical spine dysfunction. He carefully reviews how symptoms respond to head movement, posture, sleeping position, and neck tension patterns.

Vertigo Treatment Plan

For patients whose vertigo comes from the inner ear, Dr. Merriel uses what is called the Epley maneuver. Sometimes it takes more than one Epley maneuver to address the situation, so it may be performed multiple times.

For vertigo originating from the cervical spine, Dr. Merriel addresses any subluxations and tension in the neck.

He also asks patients about their workstation setup and how they sleep. Sleeping on your stomach with your head turned to one side creates a lot of tension in the neck. This type of tension is commonly seen in patients with cervicogenic vertigo.

Vertigo Patient FAQs

What is vertigo?
Vertigo is the sensation of spinning or movement when the body is still. It differs from general dizziness and often involves balance system dysfunction.

What are the common types of vertigo?

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Triggered by specific head movements
  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis: Related to inner ear inflammation
  • Cervicogenic vertigo: Associated with neck dysfunction

Dr. Merriel commonly evaluates both inner ear-related vertigo and cervicogenic vertigo connected to upper neck dysfunction.

What symptoms are commonly associated with vertigo?

  • Spinning sensations
  • Balance problems
  • Nausea
  • Unsteadiness
  • Difficulty focusing

Symptoms may worsen when turning the head or changing position.

How does the spine and nervous system affect vertigo?
The spine and nervous system play a major role in balance and coordination. Dysfunction in these areas can disrupt balance signals.
Dr. Merriel explains that dysfunction around the upper cervical spine may contribute to dizziness and balance disturbances.

Can vertigo go away on its own?
Some cases improve, but when vertigo is linked to neck or nervous system dysfunction, symptoms often persist without addressing the underlying cause.

What chiropractic techniques are used for vertigo treatment?
Techniques are gentle and may include cervical adjustments, posture correction, and balance-focused care based on findings.
Dr. Merriel may also use the Epley maneuver when inner ear crystal involvement is suspected.

What results can you expect from vertigo treatment?
Many patients experience gradual improvement in balance, reduced dizziness, and better daily function.
Progress depends on the underlying cause and how the body responds to treatment.

When should you seek treatment for vertigo?
You should seek treatment if vertigo episodes are recurring, worsening, or interfering with daily activities such as walking, driving, or working.

What is the fastest way to relieve vertigo symptoms?
The fastest recovery depends on identifying the underlying cause. Temporary strategies may help, but lasting improvement comes from addressing the source.
Dr. Merriel explains that some patients respond quickly to the Epley maneuver, while others require additional care when neck dysfunction is involved.

Can chiropractic treatment cure vertigo?
Chiropractic care does not claim to cure vertigo. Care focuses on addressing contributing factors such as neck dysfunction or nervous system involvement.

How many sessions are usually needed for vertigo treatment?
The number of sessions varies based on the type of vertigo, severity, and response to care. Progress is monitored and adjusted.

Is vertigo treatment painful?
Vertigo treatment is designed to be gentle and comfortable. Most patients describe care as calm and reassuring.
Dr. Merriel also offers instrument-assisted options for patients who are nervous about traditional neck adjustments.

When should I see a doctor or chiropractor for vertigo?
Seek care if vertigo persists, worsens, or affects balance and safety. Immediate medical evaluation is recommended for severe neurological symptoms.
