What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways rather than remaining straight. The curve can be mild or more noticeable and may develop during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
Some people experience pain or stiffness, while others notice changes in posture before discomfort appears.
Dr. Merriel explains that scoliosis can also cause muscle imbalances, in which one side of the spine becomes tighter or more strained than the other.
Early Symptoms in Children and Teens
Parents may notice early signs such as:
- uneven shoulders or hips
- one shoulder blade appears more prominent
- clothing fitting unevenly
- changes in posture
Early evaluation helps guide appropriate care as the child grows.
Children and teens may also complain of tightness, fatigue, or discomfort after sports, sitting, or physical activity.
Symptoms of Adult Scoliosis
Adults with scoliosis may experience:
- Back or neck pain
- Muscle tightness or fatigue
- Stiffness with movement
- Postural imbalance
- Leg or hip discomfort in some cases
Symptoms often increase when spinal stress is left unaddressed.
Dr. Merriel notes that adults with scoliosis often have greater tension and spasm on one side of the spine, especially around the curve.
How Scoliosis Is Diagnosed
Diagnosis begins with a thorough evaluation at Go Greenlight Chiropractic. This may include:
- Health and family history review
- Postural assessment
- Spinal movement evaluation
- Digital X rays when needed to assess spinal curvature
Dr. Merriel also evaluates which side of the spine is tighter, how the muscles are responding to the curve, and whether movement restrictions or spasms are contributing to discomfort.
Our Approach to Scoliosis Treatment
If a patient has never had treatment for scoliosis, they are typically much tighter on one side of the spine than the other. Depending on the curve’s direction and degree of involvement, Dr. Merriel tailors treatment to release tension on the affected side. For example, if the curve goes toward the left, the left side of the spine is in spasm.
Dr. Merriel focuses on adjusting the joints of the lower back while also showing patients specific exercises to release tension on the tighter side.
He uses electrical muscle stimulation on that side to help relax the muscles, so the patient can get a good counter-stretch and adjustment.
What to Expect During Scoliosis Treatment
There may be some improvement in the scoliosis, but the likelihood of significant correction depends on the age of the patient.
If scoliosis is caught early in a young patient, there is a better chance of working with the curve. Once a patient is an adult, the curve is pretty much set, and it is very difficult to reverse. Some correction is possible, but full straightening of the spine is rare.

FAQs About Scoliosis Treatment
Can scoliosis be corrected without surgery?
Many mild to moderate cases can be managed conservatively. Care focuses on spinal balance, comfort, and function rather than forceful correction.
Dr. Merriel explains that adult scoliosis curves are often difficult to fully reverse, but supportive care may help improve comfort and movement.
Does chiropractic care stop scoliosis progression?
Chiropractic care helps support spinal movement and reduce stress. Progression depends on age, curve type, and growth factors.
Treatment may also help reduce muscle imbalance and tension surrounding the curve.
Do I need X-rays before starting treatment?
X-rays may be recommended to understand the spinal structure and curvature. Not every patient needs imaging right away.
Dr. Merriel uses examination findings and patient history to help determine when imaging may be appropriate.
When should you seek treatment for scoliosis?
Evaluation is recommended if posture changes, discomfort, or curvature are noticed at any age.
Early evaluation may help guide appropriate care and support better long-term spinal function.
How long does scoliosis treatment take?
Treatment length varies based on age, curve severity, and individual goals.
Patients with long-standing curves or significant muscular tension may require more ongoing support and exercise guidance.
Is chiropractic treatment for scoliosis painful?
Care is designed to be gentle and comfortable, especially for children and sensitive patients.
Dr. Merriel focuses on reducing tension gradually and adjusting treatment based on the patient’s comfort level.
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that could be painful or crippling when left untreated.
At Greenlight Chiropractic & Wellness Lab, the expert chiropractic team offers holistic treatments to better align your spine and reduce the risk of further discomfort.
What are the symptoms of scoliosis?
Main symptoms include uneven waist, uneven shoulder blades, back or neck pain, a visible curve in your spine, pronounced shoulder blade, and the side of your rib cage jutting forward.
Mild scoliosis may not cause any noticeable discomfort, but severe cases can lead to pain, back problems, or even breathing difficulty when left untreated.
What are the risk factors for scoliosis?
The cause of scoliosis isn’t entirely clear, but it appears to run in families. Muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, congenital disabilities, spinal cord abnormalities, or spinal injuries could also increase your risk.
Girls are more likely than boys to develop crippling symptoms because of scoliosis. Signs and symptoms often begin during adolescence and may worsen over time when left untreated.
How does my doctor diagnose scoliosis?
To diagnose scoliosis and its severity, our experts examine your spine while you stand up and bend forward.
They also complete a physical exam and may recommend X-rays, an MRI, or another imaging procedure.
How is scoliosis treated?
Treatments include bracing to reduce further curvature, chiropractic adjustments for improved spinal alignment and posture, and massage therapy to relieve tension and stress.
In severe cases of scoliosis, you may need surgery to improve the structure and function of your spine.
