What spinal decompression is

The discs between your vertebrae act as cushions. When a disc bulges or herniates, or loses height with age, it can press on nearby nerves and cause pain in the back or neck, or symptoms that travel into the arm or leg.

Spinal decompression gently and gradually separates the vertebrae, then relaxes, in cycles. The aim is to reduce pressure on the disc and the nerves around it and to give the area better conditions to settle. It is done fully clothed and without needles or surgery.

Who it may suit

Decompression may be considered for people with:

  • A bulging or herniated disc in the lower back or neck
  • Sciatica or leg pain related to a disc
  • Arm pain or tingling related to a disc in the neck
  • Disc-related back or neck pain that has not settled with other conservative care

It is not right for everyone. Your chiropractor will take your history, examine you and review any imaging before recommending it. Decompression is generally not used during pregnancy, after certain spinal surgeries or with some bone conditions, which is one more reason the exam comes first.

What a session involves

You lie comfortably on the table, on your back or stomach, with a harness fitted around your hips or a support for your neck. The table then applies a gentle pull that increases and eases in a slow rhythm. Most people find it relaxing, and some fall asleep.

Your chiropractor sets the treatment for your body and your symptoms and checks in with you along the way. Decompression is usually part of a broader plan that can include adjustments, soft tissue work and exercises to support the spine.

After your session

Most people return to their day straight afterward. Your chiropractor may suggest how to sit, lift and move between visits, and which exercises to do at home, so the benefits of treatment carry into daily life.
