What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses low-level red and near-infrared light. The light does not burn or heat the skin. It is absorbed by cells in the skin and the tissue beneath it.

Inside cells, the light is absorbed by the mitochondria, the part of the cell that produces energy. Research suggests this can support how cells work and repair themselves, increase local circulation and calm inflammation. These are the effects that make it interesting for sore muscles and joints.

How a session works

You relax while the light is directed at your body for a set amount of time. The treatment is painless. Most people feel nothing, or a gentle warmth, and you can return to your day straight afterward.

Your chiropractor will talk with you about whether red light fits into your care, how it would work alongside adjustments and exercise, and how often it makes sense for you.

Muscle and joint soreness and recovery

Red light therapy is most often used for muscle soreness, joint stiffness and recovery after activity or a minor strain. Some people use it to help them feel ready to train again, and others to ease aches that come with everyday wear and tear.

It is one part of a care plan, not a cure on its own. Your chiropractor will look at the cause of your soreness and pair red light with the adjustments, soft tissue work and exercises that address it.
